Hi Darren! Congratulations for this great site! Here's a tip for all Hammond-players in Europe: if someone wants to study Hammond-Organ, come to Enschede in the Netherlands! The Conservatorium of the Hogeschool Enschede is one of the last places, where you can do that! It's not a private school, after 4 years you get an official diplom. At the moment there are only six Hammond-Students in Enschede, and I'm one of them. If you want to join this >exclusive club< :-), come to Enschede!

Hi Darren,
Congratulations on a very promising site. I am delighted to see that the Hammond is alive and well after all these years. In the 60/s - early 70s I worked for City Electronics in North Harrow and serviced many Hammond Tone Whell Organs along with Lowrie, Thomas, Baldwin, Farfisa, Vox Continental and Bird - with neon dividers!
Hammond was handled by Boosey and Hawkes in Edgeware in those days and the Service Manager was David Maughan. In later years I remember Nick Kilby and played a few gigs with him on organ and me on drums.
I regularly went to see Georgie Fame, Zoot Money and Brian Auger and the Trinity - all Hammond users.
At CE we used to split A100,s for groups to transport more easily. I can still remember the horror on some of our domestic customers faces if they wandered into the workshop just as we were taking the jig saw to the cabinet!!
Are there any s/h M,s around these days and, if so, how much do they fetch?
I am still good friends with Dave Brown who also worked at CE and went on to be S Mngr of Thomas organs. You may also have heard of John Gummer who was one of the partners at CE in those days.
Good luck with the site - I'll look in from time to time to see how it's coming on.
Best regards,
Dave Woodnutt (G0RAU if you happen to into Ham Radio)

A great site - I can't imagine why I hadn't found it months ago actually! Used to play an XB2 but just couldn't get it to "breathe" (if you don't know what I mean by that, listen to more B3 recordings!) - guess a 122 might have helped, but was the internal "Leslie" on the XB2 dire, or was it just my ears? Off to see an M100 tonight which is going for about a quarter of the price you have to pay for a C3 nowadays. Has to be worth a look anyway! Any recommendations on the best Leslie to use with an M100? It has a 910 at the moment, which is probably going straight back into the Loot! Best wishes to all.
Alex
the XB2 Leslie simulator used to sound pretty good, but your right, its not exactly 122 is it..hehe. The version 2 was better, but the new digital Leslie on the XB1/XK2 takes some beating. they certainly learnt from the XB2

Great site, Darren !! I've been playing the Hammond for 40 years,I have a B3 and 122 Leslie. I learned to play at a roller skating rink in 1960. Hammond organs are the most beautiful sounds I had ever heard then, and that is still true to this day.

Hi Darren found the site through the webring and thought I'd sign the guestbook.I'm a drummer, but have always had a great love for tonewheel Hammonds,(many a time I've had to help carry split C3's!!!!).I've never been able to play keys all that well myself, but that has never stopped my enthusiasm for listening to Emerson,Lord,Smith(both of them!)J.T.Q.,Coster,Mclagan (even the band 'Boston' whose Hammond player was the guitarist Tom Scholz),in fact hero worshipping everyone who has ever played and coaxed those wonderful sounds out of a Hammond tone wheel! Keep up the good work, site is superb. I've promised myself I will have a B3 or a C3 some day even if I can only look at it and somebody else does the playing!!

Hey, It' great to finally see someonecknowlede the existance of the TTR-100. I wouldn't want to go to a gig without her. With a 770 Leslie I rarely even have to mike the organ. At least not in smaller clubs. I have a model BC too, but she's too big for me to take out often. Not when I an carry half of the weight. I can move the TTR alone with the case I made. I'll get pictures of it on my web site eventually. More pictures are on my bands web site at http://www.RealityJones.com Listen to some M3's if you get a chance. We love to get feedack.

Hi Darren Great site. Been repairing HAMMONDS now for over 20 years and not seen all there is to see yet. I was told that if you pull one drawbar a notch every second of your life it will take 108 years to complete the sound range. Fascinating machines, I have owned most of the models at one time or another and my X5 and 760 takes some beating. Some MP3's for people to hear would be a great feature. Can I reccomend the OrganFax web site for Organ enthusiasts Regards to you all at 'Base'

In the UK...if it's in really good condition, average of £400-£500, if it has an external Leslie ..sell it separately. try the forum, and the loot (www.loot.com)

Nice site ! Question : The X5 is described as infamous. Why ? I have recently aquired an X5, with a 450W sharma. But as yet I can get no sound. The sharma does works fine. I need a crash course in hammond circuit diagrams me thinks, but finding anything on the X5 has been difficult. This is the first site on which a picture has been posted. It would be cool to see a description/brief history with the picture.
Cheers
Dirk

It is me again. Besides encouraging the exchange of great Hammond Organ performers whose records are out of production as a way to preserve their memory, I think it is urgent to interview alive artist like Jimmy McGriff, as you have done it, to know their feelings about the instruments, and to know exactly how would they classify themselves. I think you should interview in England those great Hammond Organ players like Harry Stoneham, Danny Hodges (who used to sell organs al Boosey & Hawkes, Mike Carr and incredible jazz player at Ronnie Scott´s and so many great organist that the UK have and have performed for the BBC. Keep on doing so well. Please do not abandon us.
Trying to do it now...have you seen Mark's great photos in the gallery??

Cool site. At least there is some mention of the Hammond B-200 and B-300. I thought Hammond had made one of each and that I was the only one to have these. More on portables. I need one more of each........
Dont forget the B250 and the 400 too!

Great to see a site dedicated to the "King" of electronic Instruments. I own a 1941 model E that was being dumped by a Church because it picked up the RF of a local country music station. (I guess they didn't want to sing along with Mearl, Roy, Gene or Buck owens on a Sunday morning.)The price was right (Free) and I got rid of the RF in no time. I also own a Hammond Piper Autochord (The Kids like this one) and a 1956 B3. Keep the site going and I'll be checking back from time to time. Regards & Good luck, Chuck L.

Darren, you have a great site.keep up the good work. I have been playing Hammond organs since the seventies when i was a little kid.I play guitar, drums, and most of my family including my partner are vocalists. For many years i have written material including Jazz,Blues,Pop,Rock,Dance, jungle,Garage, practically most things. But somehow there is all way's a Hammond sound some where in most of my material. My number one instrument from choice has to be a Hammond B3.There is only one organ the hammond.I firmly believe that suzuki should produce the B3 tone wheel again.Yes it would be expensive but so is a Steinway grande and they still sell.Come on folks lets stop copying, lets have the real thing again. It's the industry standard, and any thing else comes second. The XB-3 sounds and looks good.Does any one no why the USA get a XB-3 with a solid wood veneer cabinet and the (UK)customers have to put up with a cheaper laminate veneer from Japan? Incidentaly, can any one understand why Hammond (UK) are not getting any more XB-3 models.Apparently there are only two XB-3 currently in Japan allocated for Belgium Hammonds European distribution site and one in Belguim. This i was informed of this week by Hammonds (UK) Sales exec. When i asked if they could import one from the USA,i was told sorry they dont have CE approval.Strange don't you think?Sorry barry it,s not your fault. I'am currently in the process of forming my own web site dedicated to Hammond organs.I will provide the site address as soon as it is available. For those of you that are looking for original restored Hammonds such as the B3, A100,C3,etc send me an email and i will return you a list of organs available.I think it is about time that decent Hammond tonewheel organs such as the B3 should be available to people in the (uk) and not just dream't about.I intend to make this affordable reality. Darren once again keep up the good work and lets work together to keep the king of Key's alive. Take care Buddy,
I don't usually reply to guest-book entries, but I thought this needed a response.
Thanks for your nice comments about the site, Its all done in my spare time...I love it!
Wouldn't it be great if we could build a tonewheel organ today? However...like we said on the phone Richard.. would you be prepared to pay the price that it would cost in tooling up, securing factory time and labour, shipping costs, and then trying to obtain CE conformity for emissions? (impossible I would think). You didn't think you would be able to get your insurance company to cough up with 100 grand for a brand new tonewheel Hammond :•). I'm afraid I cant see it happening. Just to cover the cost involved would be enormous and then someone will need to make a profit on that too.
At the end of the day, we have to move with the times. Suzuki corp have done their best to keep the spirit of the Hammond Organ alive, and they have done a pretty fine job too! You know, until recently we had a lovely 1974 Rover P6B (V8 engine) a real dream...lovely for a trip to the shops or out in the country. But when it came to holidays and 'work' we preferred to use the new Rover 800, why? comfort, ABS, power steering, air conditioning, air bags, 27mpg more fuel economy, reliability...etc. Now when it comes to a 'working' Hammond, will it be my lovely old tonewheel organ...or my XK2 that fits in the boot of the Rover 800? It's down to personal choice. (Just as long as its not a VK7...then we would have to hit you with a big stick :•} )
As for the XB3 US not conforming to CE standards; its never been submitted...It would possibly pass, depends on the glues used for the wood veneer, the polishes and dyes, and then it would have to pass the dreaded emissions standards test. Would cost thousands pounds to do that, plus shipping them back to Europe from the USA. Nobody has been prepared to pay extra for the little luxury of a different wood cabinet!
Then there is the possibility of importing old USA models, a nice idea....you need to consider purchase price, shipping (gulp, the USA is BIG, as well as a long way from here) and most importantly, converting volts and cycles. And then the massive task of restoring, and selling on, as well as a guarantee...then what happens after two months and the transformer blows in the middle of a gig? Would the customer that just paid 10-12 grand be happy to wait for two or three weeks whilst you try and get hold of a transformer from someone else's broken down RT3? I have looked into it myself, as many have done, The numbers don't add up though, you end up with a very nice instrument that owes you a small mortgage! And sadly most of the good UK stuff has already gone to Germany, Belgium, Holland etc. And then on top of all that you have to be able to sell them a Leslie, now there's a nice task .... to get hold of a good valve 147 or 122.
As much as we love the tonewheel organs (I have three
myself) Why should we keep on knocking one another's ideas and expectations of
what is a 'real' Hammond . Whether you own a 1936 model BC, a 1978 X5 or a 1999 XB3, you OWN A HAMMOND. The tonewheel organs will always have a place in our hearts, after all they are THE keyboard instrument, but why keep holding on to the
past so tightly, and putting down anyone that owns a tonewheeless Hammond?
I love all of them, and in creating this site I try my best to look
after everyone that owns a Hammond (hmm, now where are my F200 scans??
..hehe )
Please post further comments in the forum, I guess this could make for interesting reading.

Just happened to luck up on this site. I love both the pipe organ and the Hammond. As a Afro-American minister of music for my home church . We have both. We use the Hammond for most of the gospel music we sing. I love the organ. My church has had our B-3 brandnew since 1976. For gopsel music there is nothing else like it. As I do enjoy the pipeorgan for the classical and more sacred works we offer unto God. I know that I will enjoy this site. I'll tell my other musician friends.

Memories. Almost fifty years ago, I played a model D at the U. S. Naval Base Receiving Station Chapel (Charleston SC) I was a senior in HS. I did not know that all Hammonds did not have a celeste generator. "Mine" did, of course, and a tremolo. Sounded pretty good in a large, handsome room. Lawton Posey

Great site at last !- have been playing Hammonds for 30+ years since I was 14.Parents were chairman/secretary of Bournemouth Hammond Organ Society in '70's. Used to go and see the likes of George Blackmore,Keith Beckingham, Brian Sharp and Stanley King. I grew up listening to Keith Emerson, and Jon Lord - check the Deep Purple Albert Hall with orchestra, for some great close up Jon Lord ! Some great Hammond stuff around at the moment - check out James Taylor Quartet, Charlatans, Kula Shaker, and Morgan. Look out for the film 'Still Crazy' if you like Hammond. The new Colin Blunstone/Rod Argent Album is out on 2/4/01 - if you like Hammond..... Regards, Paul.
Currently have a 1960's RT3 & Leslie 122RV.

Played pro. for many years - piano and as many Hammond tonewheels/Leslies I could find. Switching from 'vibrato' to 'chorale' or visa-versa I would compare almost to having an orgasm! Modern keyboards are clever but do not have a soul like a Hammond.

There are a few specials still alive. Own a hammond b-1 to b-3 conversion, with moog enhancement, chop case (calif. tech.?), anvil cases. CHERRY (aside from being in a console much lighter) . 145 along, trek II mods, pedals (seperate, now). Crazy shit who did the moog alt went and died suposedly. Anyone you brits know of a tech who has been crazy enough to involve his/herself in such twistedness? Gig it out quite a bit and would like to have someone to turn to if I ever need it.
