Just a quick message to express my condolences on the passing of Don, even though it was 3 years ago. It is my understanding that he knew my father, John K. Dumas (aka Johnny King) and that they were friends. John may not have mentioned me to him, however I have heard stories that John and his then wife Beverly would visit Don in California in the 60s with my half sister, Leslie who supposedly was named after this wonderful invention. If anyone in the family would like to get in touch, please feel free to use the email address. Thank you. Sincerely, John England

I did not realize the Don Leslie had passsed on and send my deepest sympathy. Not knowing him personaly is not to say I did not know him. I spent over 20 years with one of his fabulous tone cabinets. One of the best stories I like to tell is of the Young Rascals Song GROOVIN'. For forty years I thought part of the lyrics Felix Cavaliere was singing said "...Life would be ecstasy, you and me and Leslie...(endlessly is the real word)" If you get a chance listen to it. You should try to have him inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame.

I just saw this page--nearly three years after Don Leslie passed on. I have been in love with the B3/Leslie 122 combination since childhood. I was always fascinated with Don Leslie's invention; so incredibly simple on the surface but so incredibly complicated to describe. Years later; I've been banging on my own B3/122 rigs for decades--and just recently got one of the new Leslie 3300s. Listening to it with my new Hammond XK3 reminds me the incredible impact Don Leslie had on contemporary music. Had Laurens Hammond not been so incredibly hardheaded--who knows what might have happened? Don Leslie's legacy will live on for many, many more generations. Laurens Hammond invented the musical "automobile," but it was Don Leslie who invented its wheels. God bless you, Don. sean hall 4/27/07

I only just learned of Don Leslie passing on, and I am so glad that such a wonderful creative person was alive during my time. I say this, becasue at the mere age of 11 or so, I set ears for the first time on a Leslie Speaker cabinet here in Adelaide, South Australa [at Allans music store]. It was not long after this experience, that I made my own versio of the Leslie speaker so I could play my Hammond organ that my father brought for me, an L-222 through the homemade Leslie spaker cabinet. I recall the first protoype I built, I used to ask my younger sisters to spin the upper horn assembly for me while I played the Hammond through it, for the essembly was not motorized at that point. My sisteres jokingly curse me about those times to this day, where they feel that I was "slave driving" them to spin that horn essembly for me { I was simply very enthusiastic and really, my sisters seemed to enjoy spinning the horn essembly for me at the time, I'm certain] God Bless Don Leslie, and those whom he left behind may you be comforted knowing that someone from Australia is so much indepted to Mr Don Leslie. Mr. Don Leslie will live in my heart forever, and his memory comes to life when I listen to songs like "White Shade of Pale" by Procol Harem, published on vinyl in the late 60s, as well as many others by Chicago and Santana. The Hammond/Leslie combination is legendary in the music industry. I am a drummer (now a hobbyist and part-time pro), and have played along side a Hammond-driven Leslie many times. Thank you Don, wherever you are. Your legacy live on for us musicians!

As a comparitively newcommer to the internet and thus e mails,I was unaware untill this week that this site existed. I am a lifelong organist since getting my membership to the Royal college in London in the mid 1960's when I was 14. I learnt the basics of the organ at St Christophers parish church in Surrey ,England, when I was a chorister and,at that time ,taking advanced piano lessons. The organ was a Hammond Bc originally linked to a hammond PR 40 tone cabinet.Latterly it was fitted with a Leslie 122 RV. These were changed for a small 2 manual pipe organ after I left to study at Guildford Cathedral in 1968. My organ studies were ,sadly ,part time as I was also interested in electronics and went on to gain my Msc degree in the same. I come from a very musical family and could play by 'ear' from the age of six. I am now organist at the Episcopalian Cathedral Church in Bucksburn Aberdeen ,Scotland. Because I have the ability to just hear music on the radio and play it ,I naturally fell into playing with Bands. When I was at St Christophers,we had two highly competent classically trained organists who knocked the Hammond organ and said it was'rubish. I am now in my early 50's and cannot disagree with them more. Since the early 1970's I have played ,with local and international cabaret artist ,almost exclusivly on hammonds linked to Leslie speakers. As an electeonics man I wholeheartedly aggree with your husbands quoted statement that people ,in general,do not understand the brilliance of the Leslie concept. It is not soley dependant upon the Doppler effect. It gives the movement and phase changes which one can expect in a pipe organ and, when played on the choral effect, makes the organ sound more like a true pipe organ. Also, when the Leslie is used between Choral and Tremelo it can give the theatre effect or,with changes to the drawbars on a Hammond,or stops on any other electronic organ, the Jazz, rock or blues sound. As an electronic engineer, the leslie is a very well designed and reatively trouble free device which is easy to work on and well engineered .The most faults I see are on early Leslies which suffer component failure due to ageing of the type of components available when they were built. Having said that ,they should have been serviced more regularily as some of these are 50 years plus old. The reason that the organists who started my training did not like the Hammond/Leslie combination was thet they did not understand the total concept. In otherwords ,as good clasical musicians as they were, they were of the old pipe organ school. I will conclude by saying that I would have loved to have had the internet before and ,perhaps ,being able to exchange e mails with Don himself and to give my opinion that without the Leslie ,Laurens Hammond would never have achieved the fame that he did. Don's speaker system could only have been conceived by a musician who was also an acomplished organist and a true inovator. I am certain that we will never see this genious again and ,though belated,I would like to pass on my condolences and my thanks to a great inovator. His heritage will live forever. My Best wishes kenneth Machrae MRCO(UK)

For the sheer fact alone that the Leslie Speaker was used in conjunction with the god-like Hammond B3 on the, no arguments please, greatest song ever written; in such an unique and fantastic way, (Like a Rolling Stone) there should be a Laurens Hammond and Don Leslie day world-wide. As I'm currently bidding on a Hammond/Leslie on the wonderful, and yet deadly, e-bay I thought I'd research a little more. Many thanks to you all, I'm deeply sorry to hear of Don's passing, however that's only in a selfish way, I'm eternally glad he had a great 93 years and would love to read any memoirs if you could point me in the direction! To the family of Don Leslie: I would like to express my appreciation for Mr. Leslie's accomplishments. I really believe his invention of the Leslie Speaker revolutionized organ music. Playing the Hammond Organ is very exciting and much interesting due to his invention. As a gospel player, I can remember back in the 1960s when all the black churches were trading in their Hammond Tone Cabinets for Leslies. We just fell in love with it's sound. I think I can say for all of the gospel organist around, without a doubt, Don Leslie has through his invention made gospel music more thrilling and exciting. God Bless and Keep You!! Just wanted to say (albeit very belatedly) that I've used many of Don's products since I was 15 (now 46) and have always been impressed with his unique creative talents that have assisted us to make great music. It's perhaps a comforting thought for you, his family, to know that Don Leslie will continue to be with us all in spirit every time any of us take to a stage and play through one of his creations to entertain audiences around the world. I've met a number of people in Australia who have met Don over the years and they all said much the same thing - fascinating to talk to and a genuinely great guy. If I'm remembered in the same way, I'll be very happy indeed. Good wishes from all in Australia. Wayne Murray.

The rich and powerful sound that it produces is amazing. I only wish I had the opportunity to have met Mr. Leslie in person to thank him for his wonderful contribution to the music industry. My condolences to the Leslie family. I am sure that many have tried to express what your husband/father's invention has meant to them, but they probably realized that there are not any adjetives that could adeqautely express those thoughts. I am a church organist (Church of God In Christ background), and at the risk of offending anyone, I have to rate playing a Hammond, with a Leslie, or hearing an accomplished organist playing a Hammond, with a Leslie, right next to falling in love, or watching the birth of your children. It is something that is special and has given me countless pleasurable moments in my life. Although many have tried to emulate his gift to the musical world, I truly believe that no one or no thing can EVER replace the Hammond-Leslie sound.

Dear Leslie family: It was with regret I happened across this webpage and noted Don Leslie's passing. No, I never had a Leslie speaker (parent did not have the means) but friends did, and during my high school-organ playing years, loved the sound. I even tried to replicate the speaker for a physics class assignment, and had paid a visit to the factory, as my dad was thoroughly enamoured with the speaker and Don's brilliance. I was never successful with my experiment, but it made me appreciate the engineering. Now I'm in cardiovascular research, and the rest is many decades behind me. When I got it home I cleaned ever inch of that speaker, inside and out and for the next several months sat in my bedroom, switching the speeds and watching the rotors turn, dreaming of the day that I'd finally have the Hammond organ to play through it! ( my parent's considered taking me for psychiatric care but now I think they finally understand ) I have traveled the country playing a B-3 / Leslie rig for 3/4's of my life and will do so till the very end. I never met Don Leslie, but I sold Leslie speakers for home stereo in 1976. The upper half of the speaker had an aimable midrange and tweeter wing you could position. One version even had chrome side rails. No less important than Paul Klipsch, Leslie is almost like "telephone" or "kleenex" in its universality in the english language. I know only of his passing through the odd experience of a friend. Monday (11/29) she noticed a man walking in the mall wearing a "Leslie" t-shirt. In '76 several such shirts were printed up as a promotion for Leslie's new "high fidelity" speaker. It was unique in that it did not incorporate moving parts as other Leslies did. As my friend remarked as to the shirts' significants, its owner remarked that Don Leslie had passed away. So you see it was his very notoriety that spoke of his departure. Don Leslie may have used his "fifteen minutes" of fame, but I think he'll always have a few seconds left.

Very few people down on this earth can say they did. With dedication and diligence, he managed to make an impact on the world of music. Not only for hammonds and such but also for guitars. Bands like The Beatles are in debt for his creation. I really hope that he is in a place where pain is replaced by happiness. Let us celebrate his work and rejoice at what he achieved: to give to so many musicians a new way to express themselves. May Life Keep You Steady and Healthy.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Please accept my sincere condolence! I dare say that, without Don's genius, the music world would have been much different in the past 50 years and, what later became the world-famous ever-so recognizable "Hammond Sound" much less spectacular. No Hammond without Leslie - no Leslie without Hammond! Now, since his genius is re-united with the genius of Laurens Hammond again, we all can expect a really "heavenly" music performance, once we all arrive at our final destination! Peace, Manfred Zoermer

I did not find out about Don's passing until today, and it saddened me deeply. I have played several instruments my whole life through, but nothing moves my body and stirs my soul as effectively as hearing a Hammond pump through a "Leslie". I know that the music world has lost one of its fathers, but I also realize that his family has lost so much more and I reach out to them at this time. As much as I love church, I know my experience would not be the same if I couldn't flip the switch on that speaker and let the sound swirl over me. Truly the world is touched and changed by Don's efforts; he is missed dearly.

I very much regret the passing of Don. That being said..he did something very significant in this life and he lived a long life with the just rewards, I feel sure. All I can say is his name ranks up there with Steinway, Stradavarus and of course Hammond and lets face it the Hammond would be nothing with the Leslie 122. I own two of them and of course a B-3 The man was a force in the musical world. He will always be remembered as one of the greats!

Every once in a while, in life, you stumble upon a situation of kindred-ship. (Forgive me, as I'm having trouble expressing my feelings here) I was born into playing the hammond organ (my dad plays) and there was always an organ and leslie in the house. I was, and still am drawn to the "magic" of the Leslie. The sound to me was always engulfing to the point where I feel I should "hug" it back. In my eyes,I can't think of any one invention that impacted modern day music the way that cabinet did. I am also passing on the love (and art) of it to my sons. On a humourous note, they will also inherit my mess of a Leslie cabinet collection which has taken over half of our basement, garage, and now invading the living room. (My wife must really love me) In closing, I would like to say that it is no wonder that someone who gave something so wonderful to the world, was able to spend fifty years of thier life married to the same person. It takes a special and compasionate person for that. One that I respect, admire, and hope to match. Please thank him in your prayers for me. My deepest sympathy - Dan DeLano Jr.

Don's invention changed my life . It allowed me to be employed by and study with the late Bill Beer of Keyboard Products ( Bill customized hammonds and leslies for the worlds greatest rock and jazz artists). The more I listened to the music from these artists, the more I realized how often Don's speaker was used (it's safe to say It has been used on hundreds of millions of recordings!) Don's original 122 model deserves to be in the smithsonian institute . It is an engineering masterpiece , beatifully combining the elements of simplicity, fuctionality , reliability , and cost .Don's work has directly inspired me to experiment with music equipment design .I truely wanted to meet Don (I got as far as getting the number of the Mitchel family , but I waited to long - a decision I deeply regret. So very sad to hear the news of Don Leslie's passing on the hammond-organ.com website. I am now 41 with a family of my own but remember as a child hearing "that sound" on radio stations. Years later I found out "that sound" was a Hammond Organ through a Leslie Speaker Cabinet. I now regularly play in bands playing a Hammond/Leslie and at gigs the Leslie cabinet is still a source of amazement when I show intrigued members of the audience. For this to happen in this modern day of technological and digital marvels is indeed a mark of the true genius of Mr Leslie's invention.

I shall always remember meeting Don. I knew your neighbor "Bud" Futerrer from Illinois, and when visiting him, probably in 1962, he took us across the street to see "this guy with a fantastic model train." When I found out who he was, I was far more interested in the audio and music equipment. Don gave me a copy of an LP album he had made with George Wright, "Let George Do It." He was quite a guy; I'm glad to have been able to get to know him if only for an afternoon.

i own 2 Hammond B-3's and 2 Leslie 122's. It's a sound i have been thrilled with ever since i heard it for the first time. just knocked me out What a shame Larens Hammond couldn't seem to get over the fact the leslie speaker was what his B-3 needed to produce that incredible sound. I still use my B-3 and 122 when i play with a band called THE NIGHTSTALKERS which is a blues band in Rochester N.Y. People come up to me all the time and say "wow! thats a great sound. i didn't know anyone still carries these around" I just tell them its' no big deal and i will carry around untill i am 90 if i can. I would never want to sacrafice my sound for a simple matter of convienience. The day i have that attitude i will quit playing period. I thank Don Leslie for his incredible invention. I don't know if he is in the rock and roll hall of fame but his name certainly should be for he help to create and shape the sound of rock and roll, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae and every other style that had that sound. To the family of Don i can only say i am sorry for your loss and want u to know he has so many loyal fans, Sincerely Tad Holtz

I'll never forget the first time I heard a B3 through a 122 Leslie in a Southern Gospel service. I've loved that sound and have played for 40 years now (since I was 7 years of age). I now lead worship in two West Texas Churches with a B3 and 2 122 Leslies in each. The music has afforded me world travel in playing for well known evangelists -- and we have one of the custom B3 portables and Leslies modified by the late Bill Beer of Keyboard products for travel. There are so many occasions when the magic of that turning sound creates such emotion in the audience . . . I will be forever indebted -- to Don Leslie. Because of his instrument -- the Leslie speaker, I was intrigued and now am afforded a career of making music on the instrument I love so much. Very truly yours, Rev. William Mark Bristow

There was so much written about the Hammond organ without mention of the Leslie speaker. There are some styles whereby Hammonds (and other organs) work well solo, but, for me, the Hammond and Leslie were meant to be together. Forget about the organ for a minute, let's just sit back and appreciate the clever bit of science in Don's idea. Take an hour to flick through a University library physics text book and there are so many fundamental ideas brought together in Don's ideas. If you were a physics teacher and you wanted to demonstrate Doppler and apparent pitch shift, then there would be no better tool to do this with than a Leslie. Sampling old musical gear is almost as big a business these days as the latest release of music technology. There are some grear bits of software out there for vintage synths, electric pianos and organs. I thought there would never be a good sample of the Rhodes piano...but now I have one one that is pretty close. The only bit of gear that I have yet to get a good sample of is the Leslie speaker (slow or fast). As a great philosopher once wrote..'space is everything'. You were right, Don.

I am sure that the music world will miss Don Leslie. I have enjoyed using Leslie speakers for 40 some years, they impart a special and unique sound to organs and music of many different types. Don's speaker designs have brought me a lot of joy over the years.

Please give my sincere condolences to the Leslie family. I am saddened at the passing of such a renoun man in the music industry. I am a proud fan of the Hammand Organ/Leslie speaker. My home Church in Millsboro, DE had, in my opinion, one of the best Hammond C-3/Leslie speakers around. Local organists always had thier eyes on our C-3...many would ask if we ever were going to sell it. I always said NO WAY. As a Christian, I truly believe that God spoke wisdom into Misters Leslie and Hammond so that they would bless the Organists world wide. Certainly, I know he will be deeply missed, especially by his immediate family. Because of his genius (sp?)I must say all the great black Organists are indebted to Mr. Leslie; of which I am one. I praise God for how God ironically connected the Hammond Organ to the Leslie Speaker. In closing, I have recently thought that the Hammond Organ is not a Hammond without the Leslie Speaker nor is the Leslie Speaker a Leslie Speaker without the Hammond Organ. It has taken two Great Men to make ONE great SOUND!! My prayers to the Leslie family.

Don Leslie was a man who brought the feeling of vastness, and the presence of God into every room that used his speakers....He contributed joy to this world. God bless those of you left behind, but his joy will be felt and heard forever.

I can remember my first Leslie cabinet back in 1970. It was a model-55 (without horns) which was attached to my Farfisa Compact Duo organ. Around 1976, I purchased a 1952 Hammond B2 organ with a model-122 Leslie which I still own today. There is nothing quite like the sound of a Leslie speaker cabinet. Often imitated, but never duplicated. Don's invention was a true stroke of genius. He will be missed but never forgotten. I offer my prayers for the repose of his sole and for the comfort of his family. With Warm Regards, Johnny (Roy) Rofrano

The Leslie Speaker was the most wanted piece of equipment for the Hammond Organ and other brands as well. I have enjoyed the sounds of the Leslie Speaker for years and have always admired Don Leslie for invented such a wonderful addition to the organ. I never met Don but have admired and respected him since first hearing about him. My sincerest condolences go to his wife and family. Don left his fingerprint on this earth and it will always be remembered. God Bless. Mr. Erickson

Mr. Don Leslie indeed "left a little trail". You will remember him as a loving husband, father, friend, inventor. I will remember him for his contribution to my love of music. His name has become a noun, a verb, and an adjective. It describes something good, it makes me smile. I wish peace and happiness for you and your entire family.

My name is Jeremy Gilien. I am a Hammond organist, and have been a proud owner of the same Leslie 147 since 1971. I am also a great fan of the band Procol Harum, whose monster hit of 1967 "A Whiter Shade of Pale" introduced many people for the first time to the sound of a Hammond organ piped through a Leslie speaker. The following is part of a tribute that was originally published on Procol's web site, "Beyond the Pale": I cannot let t
